The first political parties in the United States were the Federalists and the Antifederalists. The Federalists were in favor of a strong central government, while the Antifederalists wanted more power to be given to the individual states. The Federalist Party was founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1792, and the Antifederalist Party was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1792. .
